Kerala Council for Historical Research mourns the passing of the inspirational intellectual and economist Professor M Kunhaman.
As an outspoken champion of values of social justice and democracy, Professor Kunhaman has been a friend, teacher and guiding light for researchers, activists and intellectuals for many years now. He studied economics at Calicut University, and did his postgraduate research work at CDS, Thiruvananthapuram and CUSAT, Kochi. He then taught for many years at the University of Kerala, and later at the Tuljapur campus of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. His academic work focused on land redistribution and socio-economic conditions of Dalit communities in Kerala, and his book-length publications include Development of Tribal Economy, State-Level Planning in India, and Globalisation: A Subaltern Perspective. Professor Kunhaman was also known for his writings for the general public, including for his widely read autobiography, Ethiru.
His is a loss deeply felt by the scholarly community in Kerala.
